After an emphatic week one victory against the highly ranked Romeo combined with a week two win at Eisenhower, the Blue Devil Varsity Football team looked to continue their streak at home against Dakota, a matchup between two top 15 teams in the state and it was expected to be a tight contest.
Two weeks in, the South defense had given up a combined 21 points, which is excellent considering the competition. And for the Blue Devils’ D, they started off the game just as strong as before. Dakota had the ball first and went three and out, as they were forced to punt and South’s first drive started on the Dakota 48-yard line. Unfortunately, South’s first drive and the Cougars had the same ending as South punted. The first quarter was the battle of the defenses as South quarterback Anthony Benard ’23 couldn’t get much going early. Benard finally led the offense into position to score and the field goal by kicker Bennett Smihal ’21 was blocked, resulting in the 0-0 quarter one score.
Dakota started off the second quarter with a huge run for a 50-yard touchdown– 7-0 Cougars. During the next South drive, a pass thrown by Will Johnson is picked off. The Cougars drive down the field and score a field goal — 10-0 Dakota. The Cougars later missed another field goal, resulting in a 10-0 score going into halftime. The Blue Devils started the second half 3-and-out and Dakota got a huge gain on third-and-20, moving the ball to the Blue Devil 25-yard-line. The drive ends on a field goal. The score is 13-0 Dakota. An explosive run from Egan Sullivan ’23 brings the ball to the Dakota 40-yard-line, which is soon followed by a Blue Devil touchdown by Will Johnson ’22– the score is 13-7. A touchdown scored by Dakota started the fourth quarter by driving down the field emphatically, scoring another touchdown and converting a two-point conversion, making the score 21-7 Cougars. Benard led the offense down the field but would be turned over on downs on the Dakota 30 yard line. The game would finish at 21-7 Dakota Cougars pulling off the away victory.
