Make a nice dinner

While you may not be able to sit down in a fancy restaurant this Mother’s day, you can bring the atmosphere and experience of dining out, into your own home. Prepare a three course meal and include her favorite appetizers, main course and dessert. Set up candles and lights around the dining room table and play soft music in the background to create the ambience of a sophisticated restaurant. Print out a menu with the meal plan for the night, and name each course as a reason you are appreciative of her. As you bring out each course, place a brief letter further expanding on why you chose to name the dish the way you named it. For example, the appetizer could be titled “Dedication”. In the letter, you would explain how her dedication has inspired you to be a better person.

Gift idea / activity

Since going out to purchase gifts is not ideal at the moment, creating heartfelt handmade gifts for your mom this Mother’s Day seems to be the best option. A quick and easy gift to make for your mom that she is sure to enjoy is a homemade sugar scrub. This can be made with a few ingredients from your kitchen cabinet. You will need ¼ cup of coconut oil, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 2-4 drops of yellow or red food coloring and 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil or raspberry or vanilla extract. First, melt the coconut oil for 30 seconds then pour the sugar in and mix. After that add food coloring to get to the color you want and add essential oils then store in an airtight container and enjoy!

Scavenger hunt

Print out a list of items around the house and hand it to your mom. Each item can be attached to a clue that will lead to another set of items. These objects can be pictures, small letters showing gratitude, small gifts, “coupons” for work around the house or items that represent a specific memory, such as movie theater stubs. During quarantine, it may be hard to purchase gifts that show your appreciation for her, but homemade gifts show appreciation from the heart. This scavenger does not have to be confined to just the house; the items can be hidden outside or even miles away. This activity can be customized to your liking. The last item could be an empty box that says, “Happy Mother’s Day”. This way, she can place all of the previous items she collected into one box to cherish forever.
