Five movies to watch while self-isolating

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
This movie focuses on the magic that is Mr. Rogers while also giving light to a new story line. Mr. Rogers played by Tom Hanks, is still the charismatic man beloved by generations. However, this is not a movie focused on the Mr. Rogers we know, but focused on a journalist who has to come to terms with family problems. It was thought provoking and served as a revitalization of Mr. Rogers for those who have loved him dearly. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood shows how the genuine kindness of Mr. Rogers helped to soften hearts around the world.

Spy Kids
While it came out several years ago, Spy Kids is a childhood classic for trips down Memory Lane. When Carmen and Juni Cortez discover that their parents are actually spies who have been taken captive, they must take on the persona of spies. Filled with improbable scenarios, it is the embodiment of childhood entertainment. The parts of the plot that are so unrealistic and filled with 2001 CGI are what makes this film so good. It serves as what many children wanted to be growing up–a spy. Seeing it on the big screen helped kids to realize that despite still being a kid, there is no limit on what they can do. Spy Kids, Spy Kids Game Over and Spy Kids All the Time in the World are all available on Netflix.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
This is a classic movie that has withstood the test of time for good reason. Depicting a stressed-out high schooler who just wants a day off from school, it is filled with laughs. Ferris just wants to fake being sick for a day to go downtown with his best friend and girlfriend, but he has a tendency to make trouble wherever he goes. With a suspicious principal, vengeful sister and his friend (Cameron) worrying about them “borrowing” his father’s car, there is no way for this to go wrong. It is another comedy that can be put on and watched time and time again. Ferris Buller’s Day Off is available on Netflix.

Murder Mystery
This was actually a surprisingly good movie starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler as a New York couple taking a long-awaited European Vacation. When things start to go wrong, they wind up embroiled in a billionaire’s murder and as the main suspects. Reminiscent of something out of a cheesy murder mystery novel, it is well put together with a plot that is constantly twisting and turning leaving the watcher wondering who the real villain is. I was pleasantly surprised by the acting and the plot. While murder mysteries are no new genre of movies this was well done, original and funny. Murder Mystery is available on Netflix.

The Pixar Story
Pixar has created some of the most well-known and beloved movies of the past 35 years. The Pixar Story paints an intimate look into the founding and first years of the company. Rated G, it is perfect for the entire family to watch and learn something new while cooped up inside. The documentary shows the immense amount of hard work and talent required to start the company and the key to its continued success. I found it to enlighten viewers to the beginnings of a company that has played a large role in countless childhoods around the world.
