Freshmen firsts continue with Homecoming

For incoming freshman, Homecoming is one of the main things to look forward to for their first year at South, but many freshmen have mixed opinions on the dance part of South’s homecoming.

Homecoming is one of the biggest highlights of the year, mainly for freshmen who are preparing for their first ever homecoming experience. This also means freshmen are unaware of what to expect at the dance or if they are even going to enjoy it.

“My freshman year,I didn’t really know what to expect, so I was a little surprised with how the dance was set up,” Maria Lianos ‘21 said. “I found myself wanting to leave before I was allowed to– I wasn’t expecting some perfect dance, so I just had to make the most out of it.”

A lot of freshmen are encouraged to go to the dance through upperclassmen and people who have attended before, Tommy Maccagone ’23 said.

“I’ve heard that the freshman year homecoming is a must go for every freshman because it is super fun,” Maccagnone said. “I also heard that you should attend every event including the dinner, dance and the after party.”

One big issue thing people dislike about the dance is the fact that you have to stay locked in for a certain amount of time before you can leave, Lianos said.

“I am aware of the lock in time, and it’s not a huge deal for me,” Maccagnone said. “Some of my friends are mad about that and that might be a deal-breaker for them, but for me, I don’t really care.”

Sometimes people are put off from the dance because there is a lot of talk about the downsides of the dance and they hear from their friends about all the negatives that come along with it, Katherine Bsharah ‘21 said.

“My least favorite part about the dance is honestly all the negative stigma that comes along with it,” Bsharah said. “I would tell any freshman that they should definitely give the dance a shot because it can’t hurt–  always have a positive mindset going into it, or else you won’t have fun.”

Although the dance will always be talked down upon by some people, it is a worthwhile experience no matter who you are and all freshmen are encouraged to go, Katherine Bsharah said.

“I am just looking forward to seeing what the dance is all about.” Maccagnone said. “Also going with all my friends should be fun and I can’t wait to see what the atmosphere is like and what the dance has to offer.”
