Isabel Kado ’19 is thoroughly excited to expand her education by majoring in Nursing and minoring Spanish at Frederik Meijer Honors College at Grand Valley State University this fall.

“I think Grand Valley has one of the best Nursing programs in Michigan,” Kado said. “I am looking forward to being more independent and trying lots of new things at college. Also, I am really excited to get involved with the Greek life– I have lots of friends who already go (to Grand Valley) that are involved.”

Kado said she chose to major in Nursing because she has loved medicine and the medical field ever since she could remember. Also, her motivation to apply for such a tough major such as Nursing is that she wants to be really successful and give back to her parents as well.

“I’ve always wanted to study something in the medical program,” Kado said. “When I did one of my tours at Grand Valley, (the tour guide) showed us the ‘medical mile’ in downtown Grand Rapids– that’s where I’ll be taking some of my classes junior and senior year– and it’s really cool. Also, the students in the nursing program work with the Michigan State students downtown, so I am really excited to have the opportunity to meet lots of people.”

According to Kado, the study abroad programs for Spanish motivated her to minor in Spanish there too.

“I am in AP Spanish this year and I really wanted to continue studying Spanish when I went to college,” Kado said. “(Grand Valley) has amazing study abroad programs and classes for people– like me– who want to minor in Spanish. I’m excited for it.”

Some advice to students that are interested in applying to the GVSU Honors College, Kado said, is to make sure to utilize the tours the schools offer.

“Throughout my junior year, I was doing lots of tours trying to find the right school, but none of them really caught my eye,” Kado said. “I toured Grand Valley with one of my friends from Ohio and that’s when I knew that it was the right fit. Actually, I went back again with my mom for a second tour as well.”

Kado said she highly recommends applying to the Frederik Meijer Honors College if you’re interested. It’s a good program, Kado said, at a good college.

“If you have friends that go there, go up for a weekend and visit them to see the campus,” Kado said. “See how students live day to night at the college. You’ll get a good idea of it. Also, the honors college is a really cool way to take some of your general education classes and you’ll get more housing options.”
