The girls varsity hockey team is traveling to Traverse City to play in a tournament on January 19 through the 21st.

“We’re going so that we can play against teams we normally wouldn’t have the chance to play against. The tournament gives us the opportunity to improve our play.” Co-captain, Erin Brannagan ‘18 said.

“The team plans to do lots of team bonding activities while they are away together such as exploring downtown Traverse City” Brannagan said.

“Team bonding is crucial for our team because it is a team sport and we need to be able to work well together on and off the ice.” player, Rose Williamson ‘19 said.

South, in addition to a couple other local high school teams, were invited to this tournament, according to Co-captain, Hannah Miller ‘18.

“It is nice to get the opportunity to play other teams from the upper peninsula of Michigan, which are usually better and more serious competition for us to prepare us for the State tournament at the end of the season.” Miller said.

The season is going really well with a new coach this year and a lot of new starting players, according to Williamson.

“This hockey season has been going surprisingly well. All of our players, especially our goalies Maddy Kelly and Emmy Desnoyed, have stepped up their game and with our new coach I think we can be one of the best teams in the state.” Miller said.
