The varsity football team proved to be victorious over their rival Grosse Pointe North Nov. 4, 2016 for the Division Championship, with the final score 24-14 at home. Grosse Pointe South felt pretty confident going into the game; they felt they were not going to let an opportunity slip away like the last rival game, said assistant coach Chad Hepner.

“We have been looking forward to that game since we lost the first time around,” said Captain Andrew Sharp ‘17, “adding a district championship on top of that makes it worth it so much more.”

After the win, the team could not hold back their emotions.

“After the game it was really emotional; it certainly took some sting out of the first defeat. Beating your rival at any game is a big accomplishment,” said Hepner, “also it creates an opportunity to get another run at the playoffs, and all of that coming together was really a huge win, maybe the biggest in recent memory.”

When asked what he felt after the game, Sharp said that, “adding a district championship to that game made it so much more worth it, we will be telling our grandkids about that 50 years from now,” Sharp said.

When asked how the team’s practices were going throughout the season, Hepner said it was good and the team was focused.

“We had a good week of practice and all the things we had worked all year came together, Hepner said. “We knew it was a grind and we fought through some tough injuries and tough times.”

For the seniors, the next couple games proved to be their last of their high school football career.

“I haven’t really been thinking about it that much, but it didn’t hit me until I had to find something to fill three hours of practice time the week,” Sharp said.

Last Friday, the team faced the Birmingham Groves Falcons. South’s season came to an end as they fell to Groves 44-10, according to The Tower Pulse’s twitter.

“Groves is definitely the best team we played this year. The level of coaching and discipline they play with is something we had never seen,” Sharp said.
