Burger bracket: segment 1 Red Coat

By Beth Coyle, Brendan Cauvel both ’16 and Emma Andreasen ’17 | Staff Writers and Multimedia Editor

Everyone claims they know where the best burger in Detroit is, and with Burger Bracket, we’re going to find out. Over the next few weeks we (Brendan Cauvel ‘16, Beth Coyle ‘16, and Emma Andreasen ‘17) will be going around metro Detroit searching high and low for all of the things that make a burger not just a sandwich, but an experience.

The burgers will be judged in four categories (taste, price, atmosphere and service), with some categories that include subcategories, such as fries, signature sauces, etc.

This week we went to Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak. Red Coat has been serving amazing burgers for 44 years and from how crowded the restaurant was, it does not show any signs of stopping. Walking into Red Coat we were immediately seated, and treated with respect. The red leather booths, dark wood tables, and dim lighting all set a cool tone for this classic restaurant. A nice touch on the Tavern’s part is that the bar and restaurant are nicely separated, which makes it easier to enjoy a meal without hearing people yelling at the TV in the bar. Especially since it was Monday Night Football.

Now let’s get to the burgers, Red Coat serves a two pound burger with a special beef blend that makes you remember why you love burgers. This wonderful sandwich includes a classic sesame bun, but with a nice touch, the bun was toasted on the edges, adding a layer of crunch you didn’t know you needed. With concern that the whopping burger would make the bun soggy, it somehow creates a balance of meat to bun that makes the experience that much better.

Red Coat is overrated. It’s also in that cesspit of Oakland County. Every time I go there, I have to scrub myself with a Brillo pad to get the stench of new money off me.
