The girls varsity hockey team tallied two more wins this week on Wednesday and Thursday, against Walled Lake and Ladywood, respectively.

Against a developed Walled Lake team on Wednesday night, the girls came out strong and left the rink with a solid  win.

“I think that our team played really well at all ends of the ice, backchecking hard and we had a overall great effort throughout the game,” Katie Carene ‘17 said.

Carrying a win streak as of late, the team sees themselves continuing with a solid record as playoffs and state championships approach, Carene said.

“I believe that our team will do really well this year, I think that the team really wants to make a repeat this year at states,” Carene said.

With another win in the bag, the girls begin to look ahead at the playoff picture, keeping the memories of last year’s postseason in thought while staying motivated for this year’s final stretch.

“Winning states last year was one of the best experiences that I have ever been apart of in the three years I have been at this school, I hope we can make it there again this year,” Carene said.

After the win against Walled Lake on Wednesday, the girls were back on the ice Thursday against a solid Ladywood team who gave them trouble earlier in the season.

“Ladywood is always one of our tougher opponents, along with Liggett, North and Cranbrook,” Emma Frame ‘16 said. “We lost to them in our first game of the season so winning tonight was huge. They have a lot of good players and strong goaltending.”

After two commendable victories, the team seems to be gaining motivation and getting into a groove on and off the ice, Frame said.

“I think we’ve all been playing more like a team lately,” Frame said. “There’s a lot of games where we don’t seem like we’re putting in 100% effort, especially in the first and second periods, but tonight we had it.”

With momentum building up before playoffs (which begin between Feb. 27 and Mar. 4), the girls look forward to rivalry games in the final stretch, Frame said.

“We play Liggett and North again before playoffs, which will be our most competitive games,” Frame said. “Winning states is our ultimate goal and winning both of those games will be a huge step in the right direction.”

While both rivalry teams pose huge battles for the team, Liggett in particular will be a stand out game, due to the ending of last season’s final game, Frame said.

“Liggett will for sure be our toughest competition through the rest of the season,” Frame said. “After beating them in the state finals last year, it’s going to be really competitive. We also have to play a few teams we haven’t seen this year so they’ll be something to look out for.”
The girls’ next game is Saturday Feb 6 against Detroit Mercy.
