Cruel & raw, “Carrie” is a cult classic

The bar of excellence for horror movies was set early and high with the 1976 film “Carrie.” It continues to be the best cinematic depiction of teenage cruelty.

Halloween is the perfect time of year to watch the film, and it is conveniently available on Netflix. “Carrie” is a terrific film with stark, contrasting colors and elements. The way it switches between hope and vengeance keeps the audience alert and intrigued.

The film is covered with silhouetted lighting and moody skies to reflect the personality and turmoil in young, sheltered Carrie White’s mind. Her home is dark and illuminated only by the prayer candles her religiously-devoted mother sets out. When she ‘acts out,’ her mother puts her in a small closet to “pray for forgiveness.” Because of the merciless neglect White is given, viewers feel sorry for her and develop an idea of the horrible quality of her life.

White struggles with her insecurities both in and out of school, until she is asked to the senior prom by someone who may have ulterior motives. It is amazing to see her transform into a confident person with the joy and pride she briefly gets from those around her.

“Carrie” has its faults, such as its relatively slow plot development and low sound quality, but it makes up for those faults with its intense emotion and fantastic casting. Sissy Spacek portrays White as the image of underrated intelligence and beauty. Her performance is fantastic and spine-chilling.

The peers who bullied and tormented White are given what they deserved. She delivered her full wrath upon them, and White proves to everyone she was not as helpless as originally thought.

“Carrie” proves that teenagers will go to unspeakable lengths to commit and prevent terror, and that is why it is the perfect film for this spooky time of year.
