In back-to-back years, a South girls hockey player won Miss Hockey.

By winning Miss Hockey 2013, Tenley Shield ’14 is being recognized for her accomplishments on and off the ice, assistant coach Liz Rabidoux said.

“Tenley is the player that can do everything,” said Rabidoux.  “She played forward and defense and is an all around high quality player.”

To be eligible, Miss Hockey has to have played in the league for at least three years and be on the all-state team.  Also, you have to be excellent off the ice, which includes having very good grades, Rabidoux said

“She’s a really good role model,” said Rabidoux.  “She’s a perfect example that you can be great at hockey and great in the classroom.”

Next year Tenley will be even more of a key player, Rabidoux said.  The team will be losing 11 seniors, but she will be returning to the team as a captain.

“She’s our fastest and most reliable player,” said Rabidoux.  “We never have to worry when the puck is with her.”

Despite the high expectations from her coach and teammates, Shield remains humble about her award.

“I was completely shocked when they announced that I won it,” said Tenley Shield ’14. “I thought there were probably other girls who deserved it more.”

She said her teammates and coaches were all incredible this year, adding that the coaching staff helped everybody tremendously, especially since the team had a lot of new players.

“Individually, I can’t say I’ve had too many obstacles,” said Shield.  “But as a team we did really well introducing the game to the new players.”

Shield said the team did a really good job of pulling together after losing many valuable players last year, such as Marissa and Cara Monforton (both ’12) and Claire Boyle ’12 who was Miss Hockey 2012.

“Nobody did anything alone,” said Shield.  “It was all a team effort.”
