Debuting their first studio album, “The Heist,” rapper-producer duo, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis rose to the iTunes’ top album download on Tuesday.

Seattle-born songwriter Ben Haggerty, better known as Macklemore, first established his name in the music industry in 2000, with his first extended play, “Open Your Eyes.” Twelve years later, he and his producer Ryan Lewis introduced their first studio album “The Heist.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis bring a refreshing, different tone to rap music. Many of his songs are based off of rock, jazz or even simple piano riffs, contrary to most rappers who center most of their songs on R&B music.

This rap duo does not stick to one topic or style, and instead are extremely versatile. In the album, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis use their own experiences to develop songs that dwell on controversial topics. In tying the subjects to personal experiences, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis evade overwhelming the listeners with their beliefs.

The song “Same Love” supports same sex marriage and was also inspired by Macklemore’s two gay uncles. Additionally, “Wing$” preaches to society about their obsession over material goods. In both pieces, Macklemore uses his own past as a jumping off point.

A bit of levity goes a long way in this thoughtful album. The song, “Thrift Shop,” in particular utilizes a lively saxophone and comedic lyrics to effectively liven up the whole album.

This all-over-the-map album is the perfect compilation of an aspiring songwriter and a promising producer. This will not be the height of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ success; their talent is too prevalent for there not to be more to come.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are performing in downtown Detroit at St. Andrew’s Hall on Saturday, Nov. 24. All ages are welcome, however, lyrics are explicit. Tickets are on sale at livenation.com for $15 each.
