Spirit Week ended with the Blue Devils dominating the Port Huron Northern Huskies 53-14.

“We really wanted to make a statement (in the last two games), and not only make a statement to our opponents, but to get our kids excited and confident and I think we accomplished it,” said head coach Tim Brandon.

The Blue Devils kicked the game off well, as Caleb Cimmarusti ’14 recovered a fumble on the first play of the game. That was the first of eight turnovers that South’s defense would force.

“We played hard and we never let up on them I think that was one of the most important things about (the game),” said captain Max Roeske ’13, via text message. “Our defense had some great turnovers and some good takeaways. That really helped our offense to keep pounding it down their (Port Huron Northern’s) throat.”

Among those eight turnovers that the Huskies would give up were interceptions by Larry Borum and James Champane, both ’13, along with Josh Gray ’14, and Jack Fry ’15. Jack Doyle and Renell Perkins, both ’13, also recorded interceptions, and they both ran them back for touchdowns. Neal Fleming ’13 and Benett Jackson ’14 both teamed up to force a safety.

“The whole defense (performed well), with all the turnovers early and getting us in field position, it was a team effort, everyone played great,” said Brandon.

On the offensive side of the ball, Ryan Liagre ’15 played very well in his second start at quarterback as he passed for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 24 yards and another touchdown.

Liagre connected with Jordan Spratt ’14 five times for 107 yards and two touchdowns. South’s running game came from Josh Gall, Renell Perkins, both ’13 and Jermaine Henson ’15, they combined for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

“We knew it would take time for our offense to gel and once it did you see what (can) happen,” said Brandon.

Next week the Blue Devils will take the short trip over to Grosse Pointe North to play the Norsemen as they attempt to do what South has never done before, beat North in three straight years.

“We’re excited, it’s going to be a great one,” said Brandon. “It’s the first time in a long time that both teams (have) winning seasons, that both (teams) have a lot of things to play for. It’s going to be great; it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
