Aliens, Hawaiians, pirates and Mexicans alike will come together in support of Unity Day on Friday, which will be more significant this year, Rachel Forcillo ’14, Student Association (SA) member and Unity Day chairperson said.

“There is a lot of rivalry during Homecoming week, and as a result, the school feels divided,” said Forcillo in an e-mail. “Improving Unity Day will hopefully amp up the feeling of pride in South as a whole, and lighten any feelings of animosity, ending the week on a good note.”

This Friday of Homecoming week has always been celebrated as a school-wide Unity Day; however, it did not receive much emphasis compared to each class’ respective spirit days, Forcillo said. By drawing more attention to Unity Day, SA hopes to celebrate South, as opposed to each separate class.

“Unity Day has been going on for a while, but it hasn’t been a big deal,” said Forcillo via e-mail. “Last year, we decided to decorate the hallway with streamers, which made things a little more exciting. This year, we are trying to step it up another notch.”

Recieving more enthusiasm out of students is the main goal of Unity Day, SA member Daniel Harris ’14 said.

“We want to get everyone pumped up for the parade and game. Our goal is to make it more like a spirit day for the whole school; we want people excited and South-spirited throughout the day and for the parade,” Harris said in an e-mail. “We are all Blue Devils, we all belong to a great school, and we need to keep that sense of pride and unity not only during spirit week, but throughout the year.”

On the contrary, some students believe that Unity Day will not make a difference in the overall morale of the school.

“The posters in the hallway will look cool, but I don’t really think that they’re going to make students feel all that united,” Emily Piccione’15 said.

In order to continue the hype of Homecoming week, each class has produced 20 posters to display unity throughout the school, Forcillo said. And on Saturday, members of SA made posters as well.

“The unity posters the classes made will be put up in the main hallway, as well as decorations such as blue and gold streamers,” said Forcillo via e-mail. “We want people to be just as excited for that Friday as they are for their individual class’ spirit day, and I think the decorations, especially the posters, will help that.”

The school-wide Homecoming pep assembly is also scheduled for Friday as it has been in the past, Harris said. Classes will be shortened in order to account for the time necessary for the pep assembly.

During school on Friday, students are to wear the gold school-wide shirts from their spirit pack, Forcillo said. Students who did not purchase a spirit pack should wear blue and gold. However, students should not forget to change back into their class shirt for the parade Friday evening.

All classes are to meet in the Maire parking lot before the parade, Harris said.

Come Friday, students will be stepping off of their spacecraft, onto the beach, with their sombrero on their head, and will be saying “Ahoy!” to every schoolmate, no matter which grade.
