Raising money for local breast cancer patients, the South varsity volleyball team will challenge Grosse Pointe North and Liggett on Monday, September 10 in the main gym.

“We are making big care package bags for cancer patients to bring along with them to their chemotherapy,” said Captain Claire DeBoer ’13. “We don’t have an exact number, but we would love to be able to make over 50 of them.”

The purpose of the game was to bring all three teams together and work together to help breast cancer patients in the area, Said DeBoer.

The game will feature a variety of fundraising tools, including donations and a bake sale, Kayla Stanek ’15 said.

Planning the event, all three team coaches met to discuss what each team was going to do for the game, DeBoer said.

“We (the team) talked to a cancer survivor about what sort of things helped her and comforted her while she was sick,” said Stanek.

All of the teams are going to wear pink uniforms in spirit of the fundraiser. North is even putting the last name of someone who has had breast cancer on their jerseys, DeBoer said.

Donations will come from local businesses as well as fans who donate money. “Get well” cards will also be passed around in the gym so the fans can sign them for the gift baskets, DeBoer said.

The event begins at 4 p.m. on Monday, during which the South team hopes to add to its 12 game winning streak.

“I feel like we have a great chance on winning both matches,” said DeBoer. “We have been playing really well as a team lately.”
