Administration welcomes new assistant principal

Administration+welcomes+new+assistant+principal

Margaret Brennan ’12 | Staff Writer

Completing a change of three-quarters of the administrative team in one year, Assistant Principal Debbie Higgins is the newest addition to South’s administrative staff.

Higgins will be in charge of dealing with and disciplining 11th and 12th grade students, while Assistant Principal Terry Flint will oversee the underclassmen.

“Being an assistant principal is much more than being a disciplinarian,” said Principal Dr. Matt Outlaw. “But we are looking for a few key things in this area. An assistant principal must be fair, consistent, proactive, student-centered and a good communicator in order to be successful in this area.”

Though her job is not only about discipline, Higgins said she will be working with the Student Association, where she will be attending meetings to get to know the students and staff better. She is most excited about Spirit Week and Homecoming especially.

“My job is not just about discipline,” said Higgins. “Coming and participating in whatever we do is important. I keep hearing about the spirit here at South.”

Coming from the Brighton School District, Higgins has experience with different grades and academic levels.  Though she is mostly in charge of the upperclassmen, Higgins said her ultimate goal is to see all the South students succeed.

“Her understanding of teaching and learning was very obvious,” said Outlaw. “Her five years of experience and success were highlights, along with her connection with students.  She had everything that we were looking for in a candidate, so we were very excited to add her to the team.”

Higgins said she admires the trust between the staff and students exhibited with the open campus lunch policy. She also hopes to continue to develop the relationship between the staff and student body.

“She will add a great deal to the team with her energy, her knowledge and a personality that will be well received by students, parents and especially the teachers,” said Dr. Outlaw.
