The dystopian novel takes place in the country of Panem, where Katniss Everdeen lives with her mother and her sister Prim. Every year, the government’s central city, the Capitol, chooses one male and one female teenager from each district in Panem to compete in a contest called the Hunger Games, a fight to the death which is broadcast around the nation. Only one tribute survives. When Prim’s name is called, Katniss chooses to take her place alongside Peeta, the other tribute from her district. In the events that follow, Katniss must fight for her life, while defending the ones she loves both in the arena and back home.

“It (the plot of the book) is very futuristic. There aren’t a lot of books like it. It has a lot more action than most books and it really hooks you from the beginning,” said Sohn. “It’s just something very new to read and so different from what I’ve read in the past.”

“The Hunger Games” was written by Suzanne Collins and published in September 2008; it was followed by “Catching Fire” and “The Mockingjay,” the second and third books in the series. The suspenseful and creative series quickly became popular, with the first book initially printing over 200,000 copies in 38 different countries.  “The Hunger Games” has also won numerous awards including Publisher Weekly’s “Best Books of the Year” in 2008. All three books were also New York Times #1 best sellers.

The script for the movie was drafted by Collins herself, with the help of director Gary Ross. The two also worked together to cast the movie. Jennifer Lawrence will be playing Katniss, with Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale alongside her. Lawrence is known from her performances in “X-Men: First Class” and “Winter’s Bone,” while Hutcherson starred in “Bridge to Terabithia” and “The Kids Are All Right.”Hemsworth made his 2009 debut in “The Last Song.”

Lawrence has been seen in many movies and seems like a good actress to play the role of Katniss, Ellie Flom ’15 said.

The trailer for the movie was introduced on Nov. 14, 2011. According to Collins in an interview, the trailer shows only the events leading up to the games, but barely shows events inside the arena in order to increase suspense.

From packaged mockingjay pins to a line of “Hunger Games” nail polish with colors like “rebel” and “primrose,” merchandise for the movie has been popping up all over the internet, on fan sites like Fans of the series can catch up with the latest in “Hunger Games” news, such as release dates and interviews with the cast of the movie.

With momentum for the series gaining, students should take time to read the books now, before the movie comes out, Elizabeth Flom ’15 said. Flom loved the series and plans on seeing the midnight premiere.

“I loved (the books),” said Flom. “They were so good. I liked the characters a lot and I thought the ending of the first book was really great.”

As the movie gains press coverage, thousands of readers are falling in love with the heroic journey of Katniss Everdeen, and look forward to seeing it on the big screen.

I loved these books. The first was my favorite, but the other two were good. I can’t wait for this movie.
