Ghesquiere Park ice rink is a great addition to the Pointes

Ghesquiere Park’s new ice hockey and skating rink has been an immediate hit. People of all ages gather from dusk to dawn for a fun time with their family and friends.
This new rink came about after Grosse Pointe Farms agreed to tear down the original ice rink at Kerby Baseball Field. The rink at Kerby was donated by a family, but eventually was in need of major repairs.
“I loved the rink at Kerby but it was definitely beaten up pretty bad,” Garrett Bollenbacher ‘18 said. “I go there every winter with my friends and we play all day. It’s super fun.”
The Farm’s City Little League and a large donor approached the Farm’s City Council and administration about tearing down the rink and turning Kerby Field into strictly a baseball facility.
With the condition of the rink, and the idea to renovate the baseball fields, it was clear that it was time for the rink to move.
The Farm’s City Council contacted the original donor of the rink and asked if the rink could be moved to Ghesquiere Park. The donor agreed and parts of the rink at Kerby were moved to Ghesquiere.
“The rink at Ghesquiere is just like the rink at Kerby,” Patrick Sullivan ‘18 said. “The only difference between the two rinks is the fact that Kerby had a warming hut.”
Kerby Field is now in the process of renovating the fields and buildings on the property in hopes to turn it into a baseball Mecca. The removal of the rink will allow Kerby to expand the parking lot and complete the renovations.
The Thompson L. Smith ice rink at Ghesquiere is located on Jackson Ave. off of Kenmore Dr., and will be open until the end of the winter season.
