Boys varsity soccer lost their regular season game against Utica on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Blue Devil’s home field. The final score of the game was 1-0.

South had possession of the ball throughout most of the game and gave the other team few opportunities to score. Utica scored by dribbling through South’s defense and shooting with 50 seconds left in the game.

“We played well as a team and connected passes through the midfield. We dominated the field almost the entire game and in the last minute of the game we gave up.” Peter Buhl ‘18 said.

Conor Stencel ‘20 took all four corner kicks for South giving the team the best chances to score. Utica only took two corner kicks during the game.

“I think I played pretty good, but sometimes pretty good doesn’t cut it. We seemed to be playing as individuals and not as a team.” Anthony Frasier ‘18, team co-captain said.

Goalie, Sean Ellis ‘19, saved a total of 15 shots on net in the 80 minute game. While South had eight shots on the Utica goalie.

Peter Buhl ‘18 was able to get behind Utica’s defense a couple of times leading to multiple breakaways that South couldn’t finish.

“Our team played okay, we just had a hard time scoring.” Griffin Clevenger ‘19 said.

It started to rain as the second half began making the ball and field slippery worsening the conditions of play.

The record for the boys soccer team so far this season is 2-3-4.

“The season has been really up and down. We’ve had some tough losses and some great wins. But we are starting to gain momentum and there’s a solid chance of us winning the rest of the games in our season.” Frasier said.

The next home game for boy’s varsity soccer will be Monday, Oct. 3 against Anchor Bay.
