The boys swim team blew Grosse Pointe North out of the water on Tuesday, Feb. 9 in their latest rivalry matchup; winning 119-64.

During the meet, captain Jacob Montague ’16 set another record this year for the 100 backstroke. Montague has broken six pool records, five school records and four county records. Captain Connor Mallegg ’16 also swam well in the 200 medley relay, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and freestyle relay. Montague and Mallegg both swam in the backstroke event and received first and second place, respectively.

“As a whole, I think we have a lot of power at the top of our lineup,” Mallegg said. “We have Jacob Montague setting records left and right and we have a lot of people getting State cuts this year.”

According to Mallegg, the boys have been doing well this season and have managed to beat a Division 1 team a week prior and have not lost a single meet in their own division. The team consists of five State qualified backstrokers: Matthew Melican ’19, Ethan Briggs ’18, Cameron Francis ’17, Montague, and Mallegg, who are also ranked in the top eight in the county. Other State qualifiers include: Matthew Koueiter ’18, Cameron Sanders ’17, and Patrick Waterson ’16

“We have great camaraderie on the team and that definitely contributes to our success,” Mallegg said.

Mallegg believes that one of the keys to the success of their team is that they continue to get into the pool everyday and work hard.

“The captains know how to relay our coaches memo to the rest of the team in a timely manner,” Daniel Kuhnlein ’17 said.

As a tradition, the team bleached their hair on Super Bowl Sunday in honor of their upcoming regular and championship meets. The tradition used to only be for the teammates that qualified for the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (MISCA) meet, Mallegg said, but during his freshman year it was changed so that everyone could participate.

“I think that bleaching our hair is really cool to keep the team unified,” Mallegg said.

After this meet, the team has two more regular meets and three championship meets left in their season. The MISCA event is on the weekend of Friday, Feb. 12. Their next regular season meet is at home on Wednesday, Feb. 17 versing Detroit Country Day and University of Detroit Jesuit High School.
