After last season’s heartbreaking playoff miss, South varsity football kicked off the 2015 season with a 7-0 victory over Mumford High School last night, Aug. 27.

Last night’s only touchdown was scored by David Burnett ‘16 with 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter. CJ Lemanski ’16 put up the extra point.

“I don’t remember much of the play, in the moment I felt like everything was frozen. I can’t thank my teammates enough for leading me to the endzone,” Burnett said.

Prior to the game it was thought that the offensive line would be the team’s strength, according to Burnett. It quickly became clear that the defense was the team’s anchor.

“Our (the defense’s) focus and execution was crisp with just about anything Mumford came at us with. I am proud of our defense and in fact, everyone on our team,” Burnett said.

Logan Mico ‘17, Jonathan Martinuzzi ‘16, and Mac Cimmarrusti ‘16 were some of the game’s defensive standouts, according to captain Andrew Trost ‘16.

“This game was just as hype as last year’s, but unlike last year, we can’t make the mistake of taking this win too heavily–we need to focus,” Trost said.

Come watch the Blue Devils next Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m., away at Romeo High School.
