Top 10: Halloween horrors

Top+10%3A+Halloween+horrors

By Preston Fossee ’16 | Staff Writer

  1. Halloween (1978) 9/10

R  –  91 min

With a budget of only $300,000, director John Carpenter created a masterpiece that would set the bar high for future horror films.  This thriller is a blend of suspense and shock that is an almost perfect film with the lights out and a group of friends.  When Sheriff Leigh Brackett says, “A man wouldn’t do that” (referring to a partially eaten dog), Dr. Sam Loomis replies, “This isn’t a man”, and you are immediately hooked.  Be sure to check this movie out to get in the Halloween spirit!

  1. Creepshow (1982) 8/10

R – 120 min

An anthology of five short horror stories, this movie constantly holds the viewers attention, with none of the plots being dragged on for too long (about 25 minutes each).  Directed by Stephen King, with the help of George Romero, this movie is executed well and may be the perfect fit for Halloween night.

  1. Trick ‘r Treat (2007) 8/10

R – 82 min

Despite being a newer film, “Trick r Treat” captures the essence of a classic horror film.  Four stories tied together engage the viewer in this film. Michael Dougherty’s film centers around the essence of Halloween more than any other movie mentioned on this list, even “Halloween” itself.

  1. Night of the Living Dead (1968) 7/10

UR – 96 min

This film is not going to frighten with scene after scene of blood and gore.  Instead it is full of shock and realistic suspense.  As a group of people fend for their lives, they only grow weaker, missing out on the happy ending most films have.  Its black and white format may not appeal to the modern horror fan, but the realistic human side of this film does set it apart.  Although the acting is a bit weak, George A Romero produced a film worth checking out this Halloween.

  1. It’s the great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) 7/10

25 min

A Peanuts classic, this short story can be enjoyed by kids of all ages.  It is not a movie, but still deserves a spot on this list.  This special should not frighten even very young kids.  It is a can’t-miss classic that airs around Halloween time.  Join Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang in this fun, uplifting TV short by Charles M. Schulz.

  1. Young Frankenstein (1974) 6/10

PG – 106 min

This comical spoof of the classic story of Frankenstein is one of director Mel Brook’s best creations.  The comedy in this film is well-versed and does not make any offensive statements just for a laugh.  Watch this film for a funny, well-written plot as a tribute to the old stories of Frankenstein’s monster.

  1. Nosferatu (1922) 6/10

UR – 81 min

Based of the story of Dracula, this old masterpiece has an eerie, gothic resonance that is hard to find in modern pieces.  Perhaps its age contributes to this, but the plot is just as influential.  This film recounts the story of Count Orlok.  This story is similar to that of Dracula, and it is sure to be just as engaging.

  1. House on Haunted Hill (1959) (5/10)

UR – 75 min

Although it might not have the best cinematography, this film has a unique plot which sets it apart.  Good acting, which includes Vincent Price’s role as the main character, and an overall well-executed film by director William Castle put this movie on the list.

  1. Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (1982) 4/10

R – 98 min

This movie isn’t going to satisfy because of a great plot.  In fact, the plot leaves many questions unanswered.  But it does have decent acting and funny references, reach to the James Bond movie line and its famous Q branch.  This movie is not the first of its kind, and does not make any breakthroughs for the horror film industry.  But it is an overall satisfying film in spite of it not being one-of-a-kind.

10.  The Amityville Horror (2005) 4/10

R – 90 min

A remake of an alright original, this film provides a good scare but not much more.  It is not unique in its plot, and not spectacular with it’s acting.  But it could still make a good movie night, and if the other movies on this list are not options, the film directed by Andrew Douglas might be a good choice.
