Senior and freshman classes to host annual Sadie Hawkins dance

With the annual Sadie Hawkins dance approaching, students are preparing to storm the dance floor on March 29 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Main Gym.

“I hope everyone buys a ticket,” Senior Class President Kimberly Barbour said. “It is the last formal school dance of the year, and for the seniors, it’s the last dance in the gym ever. I’m optimistic that we will have a decent turnout after so many other dances being cancelled. I also hope people don’t think that they have to have a date in order to attend the dance. Going with a group of friends is often times more fun than going with someone random.”

Last year’s Sadie’s was cancelled due to a ticket sale of less than 100,  Freshmen Class Student Council Adviser Jenna Kuess said. The Student Councils in charge tried a “Roaring 20’s” theme which may have prompted the low ticket sale. In an attempt to avoid cancellation, Sadie’s will be the traditional, formal dance it has been in previous years.

“We hope to sell close to 500 tickets this year,” Kuess said. “There hasn’t been a dance since homecoming, so hopefully more people will come because of that. Also, we’re trying to get good advertising out earlier than last year to try and get people really excited about the dance.”

All profit made from Sadie’s will be split between the four classes, Kuess said. The money will eventually go to each class’ Proms.

“I am hopeful people will realize how few opportunities there are to go to events like this after high school, and that they decide that they do not want to regret not going later,” Barbour said.

Barbour believes the theme of Sadie’s contributed to its downfall last year, and that high school students are just not as interested in dances as they used to be.

“I don’t think I’ll end up going to Sadie’s this year,” Hannah Lynch ’17. “First off, I don’t have a boyfriend to tag along with, and I feel like Homecoming is more of a dance for me. It’s more fun because more people go to that, and I don’t want to go and feel awkward if there’s barely any people at the dance.”

On the contrary, Alexis Mellos ’15 is very excited to attend Sadie’s.

“I want to get my groove on with my friends,” Mellos said.  “I can’t wait to do the ‘Cha-Cha Slide’ and ‘Cupid Shuffle’. School dances are one of the many things that brings the student body close. I hope a lot of people come and dance with me and have a good time.”

Tickets are $10 and will go on sale the week of March 24 to March 28 during both lunches.

“I encourage people to attend Sadie’s because it’s a fun, formal, and yet not too stressful dance,” said Barbour. “It isn’t like homecoming where there are tons of other things going on at the same time. It’s about having fun, getting dressed up and going to a dance with your friends.”
