In their fifth straight win against North, the girls basketball team clinched the district championship, beating North 55-35 on Friday, March 1.

“The greatest success we had last night was how hard we played on defense,” said Claire DeBoer ’13. “We also rebounded the ball very well.”

The Lady Blue Devils dominated all night outscoring North by 9 points in the first quarter and by 8 in the third quarter.

After the victory, the Lady Blue Devils marked their third win over North this season, but guard Cierra Rice ’15 knows the team needs to continue to work hard.

“The main thing we have to work on is playing smart, keep working hard, and just keeping the team chemistry going,” said Rice.

Leading scorers for south included DeBoer with 21, Rice with 14, and Gretchen Shirar ’13 with 8. DeBoer also had a monstrous game on defense with multiple blocks and steals.

“Although scoring is great, defense wins games,” said DeBoer. “We just need to keep going hard on D like we did last night.”

In the bracket the girls will not have to play tough opponents Grand Haven or Martin Luther King Jr. until the state championship game, but may have to face tough competitor Dakota for the third time this year.

“Our main goal is to make it back to the Breslin Center where both state semis and state finals take place,” said DeBoer.

The Lady Blue Devils will take on Warren Cousino at Lakeshore on Tuesday, March 5 at 5 p.m.
