The varsity football team will host defending state champion Detroit Cass Tech in the opening round of the playoffs this Friday at 7 p.m.

Cass Tech has a 7-2 record this season, with many players being recruited and committed to play at the collegiate level.

The coaches know what the Technicians possess. Cass Tech has great athletes, good size and a strong defense, said Head Coach Tim Brandon.

Cass Tech has three key seniors in the defensive backfield, Jourdan Lewis, Delano Hill and DeJuan Rogers. Hill is committed to play at Iowa, Lewis is committed to play at Michigan, and Rogers is committed to Toledo, according to Rivals.com.

Another defensive back Damon Webb, a junior from Cass Tech, holds offers from most notably Louisiana State University, Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State, according to Rivals.com. Other notables on defense include junior Deon Drake, committed to Michigan State, and senior defensive tackle Kenton Gibbs.

“We are going to find ways to exploit them,” said right tackle Phil Nauert ‘13. “We have to play with good technique and play smart football offensively.”

Offensively for Cass Tech, the Technicians are led by sophomore Jayru Campbell.  They also have a big offensive line held together by two seniors David Dawson and Dennis Finley. Dawson holds offers from many elite college programs and Finley is committed to Michigan State, according to Rivals.com.

The powerful Cass Tech team doesn’t seem to faze any Blue Devil coaches or players. Defensive Coordinator Chad Hepner said whoever they were going to play in the playoffs was going to be good.

“As a team, we can’t get caught up in the names on the other team,” said Nauert. “We got to go out there and play our game and play South football.”

Last Sunday the coaches were not surprised with the selection of Cass Tech and have been preparing to play against them, Brandon said.

“We all have to be together, we all have to work hard and we have to be prepared for them,” said Brandon.

Added Nauert, “We will be ready for them. We have the home field and that can only help our chances.”

South finished the season at 8-1 and they are coming off a dominating 36-0 win over Lakeview. The 2012 season marks the fourth straight year the Blue Devils have made the playoffs, and the last time South finished the regular with an 8-1 record was in 1989. That year they lost to Detroit Martin Luther King in the playoffs 41-0, according to Michigan-football.com.

“We had a great year this year, and I don’t want it to end,” said Nauert.

The slogan for the varsity football team season was the phrase “Come take it.” This Friday Cass Tech will try to do just that. South has not lost a home game all season.
