The Blue Devils ended the regular season with an 8-1 record after beating Lakeview 36-0 on Friday. They will play defending State Champions Detroit Cass Tech on Friday, beginning the postseason.

“We’re a very good team, and they (Lakeview) are a struggling team,” said Head Coach Tim Brandon. “This was the kind of effort and this was the kind of outcome that we wanted to have. We needed to have a decisive win and we got that, the kids played great.”

South’s defense took control of the game early by knocking the Huskies quarterback out of the game on their second drive.  From then on, the Blue Devils dominated the game.

Standouts on defense were Branden Cooper ’13, who had three tackles, and Jack Bracci, who added an interception and a fumble recovery. Jack Fry ’15 also had two tackles and a sack.

Offensively, Richie Kish ’14 started the game at quarterback and completed six of his eight passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Gall ’13 rushed for 44 yards, Mateo Krasniqi ran for 41 yards and Jermaine Henson added 56, all in the second half.

Liam McIlroy ’13 made two field goals, the first from 31 yards and the second from 28 yards. McIlroy also added a four yard rushing touchdown.

The game ended with Bracci intercepting a pass from the Huskies quarterback and taking a slide as time expired.

“I think that the kids really played exceptional football all year,” said Brandon. “We got better every week. They played together; it’s obvious that these kids care for each other and play for each other. That’s the only explanation for what we’ve done this year.”

The Blue Devils finished this year 8-1 and are looking forward to making a run in the playoffs.

“Going 8-1 this year is awesome,” said Captain Max Roeske. “I couldn’t ask for a better senior season. We are carrying great momentum into the playoffs and focused on making a run.”

The Blue Devils will host Cass Tech this Friday. The Technicians are 7-2 this year and are coming off a state championship in 2011.

“(Its) a tough match up,” said Roeske. “They’re a really good Public School League team but as the underdog on our home field it’s going to be about controlling the explosiveness in the trenches and eliminating all mistakes. Playing a clean game and playing solid Grosse Pointe South football will give us the win.”
