In a game plagued with rain and turnovers, The Blue Devils came from behind to beat North 17-15, increasing their record to 5-1 and recording their third victory against the Norseman in three years.

The first team on the board was North, taking a 6-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, North returned an interception to boost their lead to 12-0 with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Then, Jack Fry ’15 answered with his own interception and proceeded to run it 45 yards for a South touchdown.

With 6:03 left in the second quarter, North intercepted South again, this time deep in their end zone. North’s defense wasn’t satisfied. With yet another interception later in the half, North had the score and the momentum in their favor, leading 12-7 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, South’s Zach VanElslander ’13 recovered a North fumble, closely followed by a Renell Perkins ’13 rushing touchdown and an extra point added by Liam McIlroy ’13. Momentarily, The Blue Devils had the lead of 14-12.

Then, North kicked a field goal putting themselves up 15-14 at the end of the third quarter.

With 8:18 left in the game, North’s defense intercepted yet another pass. However, The Blue Devils offense drove down the field after the interception. With 45 seconds left, McIlroy kicked a field goal for three points, putting South ahead 17-15.To seal the victory, Josh Gray ’14 intercepted a North pass with 32 seconds left in the game.

“That long 14 play drive at the end where we kicked the field goal, we went straight ahead and it worked out for us,” said Head Coach Tim Brandon. “He (McIlroy) kicked it right down the middle, split the uprights.”

In his third start at quarterback, Ryan Liagre ’15 was 6-20 with 81 passing yards. Perkins had 18 carries for 69 yards and rushed for one touchdown. Clinching a playoff appearance, The Blue Devils look to continue winning and don’t plan on letting up.

“We’re going to get back into our routine,” said Brandon. “We’re not going to let up. We’re going to keep working hard.”
